Dr. Shaunak Roy is a general surgery resident at the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences (UTCOMLS) who hails from Cleveland, OH. He aims to be a surgeon uniquely equipped to innovate at the intersection of engineering and medicine. Shaunak graduated from UTCOMLS as a Doctor of Medicine with Distinction in Research in 2023.

After attending Shaker Heights High School, Shaunak received his undergraduate degree from Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) where he studied Biomedical Engineering, specializing in Biomaterials. Shaunak has a wide range of biomedical research experience in both industry and academics through companies like BioInVision and institutions like the Cleveland Clinic. While at CWRU, Shaunak was involved in research that focused on restoring sensation in subjects with limb loss. During medical school, he was involved in translational vascular biology research that examined the role of intrinsic exercise capacity in vascular physiology development. In addition to authoring publications & textbook chapters, poster presentations, and giving talks across the country, Shaunak also received several national awards and travel grants in recognition of his research from organizations such as the American Physiological Society and the American Heart Association.

Shaunak is a Bengali-American multi-instrumentalist, singer, rapper, songwriter, and record producer. Originally trained in Western classical piano, he began producing and arranging in high school and honed his craft through his collegiate tenures with a competitive fusion a Cappella team and dance team. After college, he began releasing his own music under the stage name ROYAL and provided audio production & engineering services to artists within the greater South-Asian diaspora. He coined the term “Neo Desi” to describe his artistry and creates in a variety of languages, genres, and styles. After several years of releasing solo & collaborative singles, he released his eponymous debut album shaunak in April 2023.
